I don't know if the Nvidia chip on T410 uses paste as well or some transfer pad, you'll find out if it needs new paste in the same procedure as with the CPU. Then take apart your laptop and take off the heatsink, remove the dried up Lenovopaste and apply a "ricegrain" amount of good thermal paste to the CPU.
To solve this you'd first need replacement thermal paste. I know on 2008 laptops Lenovo used cheap paste that is well dried by now. Your Thinkpad overheats simply by the CPU working despite fan usage, I think this indicates improper thermal transfer between the CPU and the heatsink. You can set it to run off at idle and run as fast as possible. TPFancontrol is a program that allows you to set the Thinkpad's fan speeds at different temperature levels. The fan tests itself at boot, then is either off at room temperature to turn on later, or on to begin with, but at a single speed. I have found that without TPFancontrol installed, Thinkpads do not increase the fan speed at extreme temperatures. The cooling system IS working however not the way it is supposed to or is it? I have noticed that the fan runs at a constant speed no matter what power plan and never goes above 4500RPM. It seems like when the CPU is working hard, the temperature rises dramatically causing the system to shut down. Had it for years, no problems running it this hot (unless it's on your lap) The BIOS fan control on W530 is horrible, fans runs almost all the time so without fan control this Thinkpad is just to loud for me. It's a 45W CPU and it runs up to 60 degrees or higher even at idle. Some people seems to want to keep lower temps than this, but in my experience modern PC's can run hot (between 60 and 75 degres) constantly for ever without any damage.Įspecially on my W530 I have to set a high fan on profile.
So my Thinkpads are running hot, still no damage yet and haven't seen any throttling problems I set the temp fan on high, usually 70-75 degrees C and fan off at 55 On older T510,T530 and W530 I could use version 0.62 or 0.63 The fan speed shown is wrong, but temps correct and it works just fine.
